I just found out that I have been nominated in the category of Best Music Photography in the new Digital Socket Awards. These awards have been set up by a bunch of Irish music bloggers and the idea is that the public provide the nominations for the various categories and then a panel of bloggers act as judges (bludges?) to decide the winners. Shortlists will be decided on in January sometime and there’s an awards ceremony in February where the winners will be announced. I think it’s a pretty good idea and I hope it will help to highlight all the interesting stuff that is going on in the music scene in Ireland that might otherwise get overlooked. I’m chuffed to get nominated.
I’m also chuffed about something else coming up early next year, which is that I’ll be having an exhibition of these photographs. This will take place in Dublin in April, and I’ll provide more details when it’s all finalised. Thanks to everyone who has helped me out with this project over the course of the last year – in particular Leagues O’Toole, Alastair Foley, Timo, Dec Forde, Karl Geraghty, Bren Berry and David Monahan. Here’s hoping 2011 is better than 2010. Can it be any worse?
The photograph above is a five minute exposure of Chicago band Maps and Atlases playing in Whelans earlier this year. While sitting upstairs taking photographs, I was chatting away to the parents of the drummer, who had flown to Dublin from Chicago to catch the last gig of his tour. That’s dedication for ya! Here’s what they sound like. Happy new year everyone …
